Fievel Goes West
About four years ago, my husband (then boyfriend) and I were sitting outside watching planes go over the house. I asked him, “Where do you think that plane is going” and he responded “Scottsdale, Arizona”. I remember being confused because that was such a random place to mention. I’m not even sure we had even talked about Arizona before that day, except to quote Martin (“Sorry Martin, I just didn’t want to go to Arizona”-google it!). Fast forward about a year later, and he finds out he will have to travel to Scottsdale on a monthly basis for work. Hey universe, I see you working! Also if you’re listening, please send me a Chanel 2.55 flap bag and $5 million-I just want to see something real quick.
This May, I made my annual trek out west to meet him after an especially long business trip and we got the best barbecue in all of the land at Little Miss BBQ in Phoenix. I waited in line for almost two hours and smelled like a bag of Kingsford charcoal when I left but it was totally worth it. Sorry in advance to all my vegan/vegetarian readers, but we got fatty brisket, ribs and smoked sausage plus a couple of sides including jalapeño cheddar grits and cole slaw.
While waiting in line, I met a fellow creative based out of Scottsdale and she shared with me (via AirDrop) a list of her favorite places to eat and drink around the city. She also gave me some kind and sage advice about starting a business, and we got a chance to talk about overcoming fear when going after your passion. Funny how life works out like that sometimes.
My favorites from the menu:
- Smoked sausage: smooth, peppery flavor with just the right amount of heat
- brisket: order it fatty/moist and you'll get the best of both worlds; the sweet, saltiness from the rendered fat and the crisp bite of the smoky crust
- cheddar grits: creamy and cheesy
- spare rib: large and in charge, juicy and salty; +1 for the smoke ring on the ribs
